A Heartfelt Anthem for SATB Choir and Keyboard
Commissioned by Sierra Choral Festival and Sierra Vista Presbyterian Church, Oakhurst, California, this piece was written in celebration of Catherine Walker’s 20 years of dedicated service as Organist and Choir Director.
This anthem, based on James 3:17-18, beautifully conveys the message that true wisdom is rooted in compassion and peace. Allan Robert Petker weaves a familiar motif into the piece, subtly incorporating the phrase “dona nobis pacem” (grant us peace). The anthem’s centerpiece features a poignant a cappella reharmonization of the verse “There is a Balm in Gilead,” highlighting the theme of wisdom.

True Wisdom Brings Peace
Description:
From the pen of Allan Robert Petker comes a new setting of James 3:17-18, which claims that true wisdom is clothed in compassion and peace. Smuggled into this anthem is a familiar motif disguised with the text, ”dona nobis pacem” (grant us peace). The center of the anthem reveals the motif’s origin while the verse about wisdom (vs 2) from ”There is A Balm in Gilead” receives an a cappella reharmonization.
